TAKES

A masterpiece of tone…gently intimate, consistently captivating”

Takes is above all a masterpiece of tone — it’s sweet, gently intimate, tenderly innocent. Two of Philly’s most beloved performers invite us to explore with them as they move within a room made of scrims, sparsely furnished with rattan (there’s the vague impression of a mid-twentieth century domestic scene); not doing much — well, little particularly showy — but with each movement intriguingly amplified and transposed via Lars Jan’s subtly shifting live video installation.  Takes eventually builds to a fiery solo amid a maelstrom of whirling, projected Nichole Canuso’s, but even its quieter moments are consistently captivating. —K.
